Dear Dr. Bortz,

Have read that cancer thrives in an acid medium, and can’t live in an alkali one. What should my prostate cancer hubby’s pH levels of his blood, urine, and salibe be and how does one keep them at this optimum level with food, nutritional supplements or herbs and using pH test strips to monitor the levels? Any info or redirection you can give me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. ___Inez M.

Dear Inez,

Your cancer/acid theory can’t hold up. The body is full of many checks and balances, which maintain the acid-base balance in a very narrow range. Ultimately, cancer is the result of a cascade of genetic changes, which lead to loss of the control gears, which manage cell division. Once cancer starts, it distorts the normal balance, often depriving the non-cancerous tissues of their nutrients and blood supply.

A specific disease comes to mind, and that is stomach cancer, which develops most commonly when the stomach no longer produces the normal acid. Aside from this connection, I know of no other cancer/acid linkage.
